Gaven, Brookelyn, Tia and Ethan, sixth grade students from Rose M. Gaffney Elementary school in Machias, Maine, took the stage with poise and confidence at Junior Achievement's recent Hall of Fame North Banquet hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor. Led by their financial literacy volunteer, Melissa Moffett, and standing before a crowd of over 350 people, they each held signs representing a topic they were exposed to and became passionate about through lessons taught by Machias Savings Bank.
How does a young student become well versed in subjects such as entrepreneurship, competitions, resumes, and job interviews? It starts with great curriculum and a well-trained volunteer teacher. Melissa Moffett, VP of Customer Service and Machias Savings Bank's Financial Literacy Coordinator, fits that bill perfectly. She first started teaching financial literacy in local schools with Junior Achievement's curriculum in 2009. She then joined the Junior Achievement Board in 2013.
Melissa states, “It’s all about the future. I know I could have used these lessons when I was in school, and I hope we’ll make a difference in many young lives. We want children of Maine to stay in Maine, manage their money, and know they have a partner in their community.”
Rose M. Gaffney's classroom teacher, Caitlyn Roy, echoes Melissa's praise of the program stating, "As a teacher, there are so many standards that I need to teach my fifth graders. The awesome part of Junior Achievement is that it squeezes in curriculum that I wouldn't normally be able to teach. Not only is it teaching new content, but a community member also gets to become part of our classroom."
In reflecting on the evening, Caitlyn continues, "The Hall of Fame North Banquet made me very proud of our Rose M. Gaffney students. They were socializing and informing very prominent people in Maine about themselves and Junior Achievement. That night I don't think it sunk in that they were talking to very important business ladies and gentlemen, but what an amazing accomplishment to look back on."
Machias Savings Bank is committed to working together and giving back to the community. Thanks to Junior Achievement, volunteers are gifted an amazing opportunity to connect and brighten the lives of children in our market areas.
