Summer is the hungriest time of the year for children. More than 85,000 Maine children participate in the free and reduced-price school lunch program and during summer months; less than 25% of those children have access to nutritious meals. In months when students should be enjoying the taste of leisure and childhood fun, many are battling food insecurities, insecurities that are creating anxiety and opening the door to the Summer Learning Loss epidemic.
Machias Savings Bank is partnering with Good Shepherd Food Bank and other local meal programs to ensure that Maine’s children have nutritious snacks during the summer! Now through August 15th, you will find donation boxes at all our branch locations for you to donate non-perishable snack items such as granola bars, nuts, fruit snacks, etc. Employees will be assembling snack bags monthly and making drop-offs at local summer food programs. For every snack bag packed, Machias Savings Bank will donate $1 back to the local program up to 2,500!
Together we can help prevent Summer Learning Loss, reduce child food insecurities and help bring back the taste of summer! If you know of a family struggling with summer hunger, let them know summer meal programs are available and can be easily located by visiting https://www.fns.usda.gov/summerfoodrocks. Don't stop there! Volunteers are always needed at your local food pantry or Summer Meal Site.
