On Stage with Junior Achievement

Gaven, Brookelyn, Tia and Ethan, sixth grade students from Rose M. Gaffney Elementary school in Machias, Maine, took the stage with poise and confidence at Junior Achievement's recent Hall of Fame North Banquet hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor.  Led by their financial literacy volunteer, Melissa Moffett, and standing before a crowd of over 350 people, they each held signs representing a topic they were exposed to and became passionate about through lessons taught by Machias Savings Bank.

At Machias Savings Bank, we are committed to supporting non-profit organizations and activities that advance community development and improve the quality of life in our Maine communities.  This year, we awarded 12 Community Development Grants totaling $50,000 to projects or services that either create or retain jobs, revitalize communities within our service area, provide affordable housing, or offer programs designed to assist low-to-moderate income individuals and families.

Banking On Cake

Early in 2016, two young, budding entrepreneurs, both having recently returned home to Downeast Maine, had a vision. More specifically, they had a vision in a jar. 

And in that jar was cheesecake…with a twist. 


Jordan Crosby and Nick Sarro, both 25, own Downeast Cheesecakes, where their signature sweet slices of cake, baked and sold in all-American mason jars, have quickly become a celebrated sensation.

Farm-to-Table Takes a Leap in Houlton

The farm-to-table movement took a literal leap forward when Took A Leap Farm opened The Vault in Houlton this past February. Located in a former bank on Main Street, the new fine dining restaurant features a tasty array of locally grown, brewed and crafted  produce and products, including cheeses from owners Rob Lawless and Kathryn Harnish's farm down the street.

On Monday, June 27, we're opening the doors to a new facility complete with high tech innovations, iPads for instructional use, and a Keurig coffee bar to make our friends in Presque Isle feel right at home.   There are floor-length windows in every office to brighten the day with sunshine and capture the amazing beauty of the County. We also wanted the new branch to fit in, so we've accented with tongue and grove pine on cathedral ceilings and featured artwork by local artist Paul Cyr.

Forces for Good: Unsung Heroes Fight Hunger in Lubec, with Lobsters on National Lobster Day

Hunger has a name and a face. It's not just a concept. It's an actual person. The marketing team from Machias Savings Bank got the unique opportunity to meet many of these people at the Lubec Food Pantry this past Wednesday, June 15.  Some were young and some were old, individuals struggling to manage oil bills, prescription costs and to put food on the table.  Unfortunately, food is sometimes the optional item in that list of needs.
